Benefits of Retractable Awnings
Lots of people are curious about retractable awnings, but never do the research and realize the true benefit of having one at their home. This article will go through some of these benefits, and dispel a few myths about patio awning ownership as well.
Myth #1
Retractable awnings are only good for enjoying your outdoor spaces when it’s raining.
Actually, patio awnings lower the temperature of the area beneath them. Studies show that they do this by almost 20 degrees in some cases. So not only do they allow you to enjoy your outdoor spaces when it’s raining by providing a large umbrella, they keep the sun off you when you want to be cooler than the surrounding area. And when you want to enjoy some sunshine on a nice day, you simple retract your awning and you’re back to full exposure.
Myth #2
Retractable awnings are prohibitively expensive
Not true. In many cases, manually operated patio awnings are less expensive than a nice set of patio furniture. If you’re interested in a motorized retractable awning, it’s a few hundred dollars more; nowhere near the huge financial burden that they have the reputation for. For some perspective, think about what you paid for that nice patio set on your deck with the 8′ umbrella, and then compare that with the cost of a 20′ x 10′ retractable awning.
Myth #3
Retractable awnings block windows
Not so. In fact, what they really do is provide shade for the inside of the house. So even while you’re not outside actively enjoying them, they’re sitting quietly over the windows, out of direct view, keeping direct sunlight from entering your home and raising the temperature. It’s one less source of heat for your air conditioner to fight against, and that translates into lower electric bills.
Myth #4
You need a lot of overhead room to install a retractable awning
In reality, you need under 8 feet of overhead space to comfortably install a retractable awning. Unless you’re over 7′ tall, this amount of overhead space will give you plenty of room underneath the awning, and enough room overhead to install brackets and hardware needed to mount it to the supporting structure.
A final benefit of retractable awnings is that they come with the ability to use a pretty amazing array of accessories. You can turn your patio into a screened in porch to eliminate bug problems, or just use screening on two sides to reduce wind of spray from driving rain.
